About Sons of Perdition
THE RECENT global clergy sexual abuse scandals in the Roman Catholic Church have shocked the world. Vital questions linger still. How could they have happened? Why now? Who is really responsible? Will they will ever end? How can such tragedies be prevented in the future?
I'm Jay Nelson, a clergy abuse survivor and activist, and I've spent the last seventeen years digging for the answers. I was surprised to find many of them buried in my own backyard of New Mexico, which unique historical circumstances made a crucial location in the ongoing crisis still sweeping the globe.
As outlands on the fringes of empire since the time of the Aztecs, New Mexico has long served as a hideout. The Catholic Church has been the mainstay of the community since the founding of the state as the furthest colonial outpost of Spain in the 1500s. Despite the Spanish Inquisition, powerful, corrupt priests survivied and even flourished here as did pagan Indian religions, crypto-Jews, and even witches somehow.
So it seemed a natural place for the Church to send its very worst offenders. In an epic but tragically-failed experiment, they would be farmed out to unsuspecting parishes across the state, the country, and even the world with dire results.
Sons of Perdition tells that amazing story of how that came about for the first time in print anywhere. But this is not just the tale of events in the American Southwest. These events are placed firmly in the context of the long, sordid history of sex and the Catholic clergy. The critical but long forgotten role of the Inquisition in dealing with promiscuous priests and suppressing scandal is detailed in all its horror.
Many other startling secrets of the global cover-up found in the course of my research are exposed here for the first time, including that of the decisive role played by none other than the current pontiff, Pope Benedict XVI, well before he ascended the throne. The effect of Vatican II in the creation of the crisis is explained.
In the end, it is shown how the cover-up, unbeknownst to most, has been quietly re-established, and what this might mean for future generations of Catholic children and their parents.
Many sources have gone into this work. Central are my extensive archives of news clippings culled from a decade of reporting in The Missing Link, the journal of the nation's leading clergy abuse victims advocacy group during the height of the crisis, the Linkup. Personal experiences and stories from the countless other victims and survivors networked with over the years were also a major contributing factor. Written sources, from massive 19-century academic histories to the many decrees of popes and councils were thoroughly explored. Finally, the personal testimony of several key insiders completed the picture.
Placed in historical context with a helpful timeline and plenty of references, Sons of Perdition tells the amazing story of two millennia of clerical sex and suppression. It’s an epic saga of saints and sinners, scandal and reform, popes and inquisitors, leaving no doubt that issues raised the Catholic sex scandals yet challenge everyone in modern society.
